Step 1: Contact Local Fire Department

- They will let you know the distance from a structure you will need and they will possibly visit your site.

- Block or stone for your fire pit
- Steel insert or fire brick for buring wood
- Gas insert if burning propane or natural gas
- Block adhesive if gluing the block or stone together
Tools
- Shovel
- Rake
- Tamper
- Level
- Dead blow hammer
- Tape measure
- Caulking gun
Step 4: Contact Dig Safe
- Call 811 to notify Dig Safe that you are starting a project so they can come out and inspect your area
- They will notify the utility companies to go to your site and see if there is anything under the ground where you plan on digging
- You will mark the area you plan to dig
- Dig Safe will email their findings once they have completed, usually within 72 hours
Step 5: Install Base
- Excavate the area for your fire pit 6″-8″ deep
- Be sure to excavate 6″ bigger than your fire pit on all sides. This will give you a sturdy base for your pit
- Make sure to arrange everything with your gas installer prior to excavation
- Install the recommended base, usually 3/4″ crushed stone and tamp the material
Step 6: Build Fire Pit
- Install the fire pit per manufacturer’s instructions
- Once the fire pit is built, call the gas installer if necessary
Step 7: Enjoy
- Be sure to start with small fires to get everything acclimated
- Do not build a fire too large for your pit, this may cause distortion of the steel insert
- Make sure you extinguish any fire prior to leaving it unattended
- Enjoy your new fire pit and relax!
