  • Step 6: Build Fire Pit
  • Step 7: Enjoy
Step 1: Contact Local Fire Department
  • They will let you know what is needed for base material for your fire pit. Typically 6″-8″ deep of 3/4″ crushed stone
  • They will let you know the distance from a structure you will need and they will possibly visit your site.
Step 2: Choose your fire pit
  • Decide which fuel you want to burn.  Wood, Liquid Propane, or Natural Gas?
  • Find the style pit that you want.  Round, Square, or Custom?

Step 3: Organize Materials & Tools
Material
  • Base material: 3/4″ Crushed Stone
  • Block or stone for your fire pit
  • Steel insert or fire brick for buring wood
  • Gas insert if burning propane or natural gas
  • Block adhesive if gluing the block or stone together
Tools
  • Shovel
  • Rake
  • Tamper
  • Level
  • Dead blow hammer
  • Tape measure
  • Caulking gun

Step 4: Contact Dig Safe
  • Call 811 to notify Dig Safe that you are starting a project so they can come out and inspect your area
  • They will notify the utility companies to go to your site and see if there is anything under the ground where you plan on digging
  • You will mark the area you plan to dig
  • Dig Safe will email their findings once they have completed, usually within 72 hours
Step 5: Install Base
  • Excavate the area for your fire pit 6″-8″ deep
  • Be sure to excavate 6″ bigger than your fire pit on all sides.  This will give you a sturdy base for your pit
  •  Make sure to arrange everything with your gas installer prior to excavation
  • Install the recommended base, usually 3/4″ crushed stone and tamp the material
Step 6: Build Fire Pit
  • Install the fire pit per manufacturer’s instructions
  • Once the fire pit is built, call the gas installer if necessary
Step 7: Enjoy
  • Be sure to start with small fires to get everything acclimated
  • Do not build a fire too large for your pit, this may cause distortion of the steel insert
  • Make sure you extinguish any fire prior to leaving it unattended
  • Enjoy your new fire pit and relax!
